Barry Moltz is a Motivational Speaker, Author, and Consultant . I met Barry Moltz for the first time at the Small Business Technology Summit in New York this February where Network Solutions was one of the sponsors. Barry was one of the Keynote speakers and spoke on the theme “Bounce! The Path to True Business Confidence”. He handed me a rubber band ball and asked me “How do you Bounce ?” and recorded my answer on video. Barry posted the video on his blog Crazy about Business, Insane for Success” .
Barry has been busy speaking and inspiring small businesses all over the country. He makes good use of tools like YouTube and you will find some amazing videos here http://youtube.com/user/bjmoltz . I also like this quote “Love everyone, trust a few, and paddle your own canoe” . You can find more such gems at his web site http://barrymoltz.com/about-barry
I took the opportunity to catch up with him a few days ago and interview him for this blog
1) You are an author and advice companies in dealing with Small Business. Is all this experience coming from leaving IBM and working on your business?
It is a combination of both. When I worked at IBM and then transitioned to a small business, I started to appreciate the training that I received from IBM. I also learned how that training and the way of doing business at IBM did not translate to being successful in small business. At IBM, the brand and corporate infrastructure really supports you. Once I no longer had that support, my successes and failures came a lot more quickly and my education in business really began!
2) What is your latest book “Bounce” about?
Its about how to let go in order to move forward and achieve more success. Conventional business wisdom tells us that there is always something to learn from failure. Not true—sometimes it just stinks! Failure that offers no real learning value becomes a big jolt to the basic business belief system. Both success and failure are simply outcomes in the lifecycle of business where repetition is inevitable and overall process matters far more than any single event or outcome. By developing the resiliency to “bounce” through these cycles determines who ultimately will succeed.
3. You have a YouTube channel where you add videos of people answering your question- How do you bounce? What has been the most interesting response?
My favorite answer on “How Do Bounce?” was a gentleman that answered- “My daughter always says- You get what you get and you do not throw a fit”! Another women said she just fell down the stairs so she does not bounce real well!
4) What advice do you have for Small Business during a recession?
My advice is to Bounce!
5) Tell us about the other books you have written or are planning to write.
My last book was “You Need to Be A Little Crazy: The Truth About Starting and Growing Your Own Business”. The best way to debunk myths about start-up business is to tell the truth: You have to be crazy to start a business. Entrepreneurs live at the complex intersection of business, financial health, physical well-being, spiritual wholeness, and family life. Tidbits of insight will vaporize isolation, encourage self-reflection, and refresh the spirit of anyone running their own business
I am currently writing a new book about Customer Service (Tentatively titled: Just Give Me Good Customer Service and No One Gets Hurt!” ) Do you ever have nightmares where someone is chasing you and you wake up right before they catch you? Or dreams of showing up late to a test at school…naked. I never have these kinds of dreams. My nightmares are all about bad customer service. I describe how important excellent customer service is in business and how rarely we receive it. In the fast moving world where the Internet gives everyone equal access to price and information, “crazy customer service” becomes the only sustainable competitive advantage.
