Network Solutions DNS update: Jan 26, 2009 4.00 pm EST

To close the loop on this here is an update.  Network Solutions had traffic spikes in DNS queries lasting between 2 to 4 hours on Thursday and Friday last week causing intermittent disruption of normal DNS query resolution. Taking steps to mitigate the DDOS attack, Network Solutions Operations Department estimates that 48 percent to 62 percent of the queries were being responded to successfully during that period. Normalcy was restored by about 5 p.m. Friday.

We regret the inconvenience and thank the customers and community for helping spread the word. While we do continually take measures to prevent these and other types of issues, unfortunately circumstances like this that deal with third parties are beyond our control. As we hope you understand, we cannot reveal details of such issues in order to prevent that information from getting into the hands of those who plan such activities.

Here are links to two articles that explain what a DDOS attack is in case our readers are interested.

Update : Jan 23, 2009 10.00 pm EST :

DNS queries for web sites should be responding normally. Thank you all for your understanding. As always, we will continue to work to take measures to prevent these and other types of technical issues caused by third parties that may impact our customers.

Update Jan 23, 2009 5.30 p.m EST :

There is a spike in DNS query volumes that is causing latency for the delay in web sites resolving. This is a result of a DDOS attack.  We are taking measures to mitigate the attack and speed up queries

—————-

There may be some latency on Network Solutions DNS Severs and some queries may be timing out.  This may include instances when someone types a domain name into a browser and the website will temporarily not resolve.  Network Solutions Operations is working on optimizing the DNS queries and investigating the issue.

Yes I know. I found out from a customer trying to get on our site. Wondered why our sales were a little slow today.

Yes we found out from a customer that called because they couldn't bring up our website today. Glad they didn't have to look on our home page to get our number.

Have to admit that I got this message via Twitter and so it saved me a phone call to customer support.
