I have written occasionally about Twitter in the past and I see it as a growing communications tool for businesses in certain aspects. Mashable was motivated to create a whole sub-site called the The Twitter Guide Book (twitter.mashable.com) but the biggest challenge of Twitter is not getting followers or engaging in a conversation, it is listening effectively to find the conversations you want to engage in with people.
This goes beyond simply understanding the Twitterverse but actually utilizing the tools within it. Recently, Jennifer Van Grove at Mashable put together a nice review of the best Twitter Applications for the Desktop.
Here are some highlights:
For the power users there are four apps and they would take up a whole monitor and make your desktop look like a communications command center. The top two are Tweetdeck and Seesmic Desktop. I have been using Tweetdeck for the past year but recent improvement have caused me to move to Seesmic Desktop – mainly multiple account monitoring and filtering – killer if you have to do this all day.
There are some good Mac and Windows specific apps in addition to some trending apps like Yahoo Sideline that may suit your needs as well.
This only covers desktop stuff and you can check The Twitter Guide Book on things like mobile apps which are a whole other post.
