Cost Saving Tips for Small Businesses

Last month, we invited you to join our small business forums discussion about some of the creative ways to reduce expenses. Obviously, the first thing most businesses are cutting out in order to save are luxuries-fresh flowers on the reception desk, magazine selection at the doctor’s office, and lollypops to keep the kids quiet at the bank are now a thing of the past.

In these economic times, there are other less obvious ways to save even more money.

Here are just a few suggestions to get started:

1. Negotiate shipping rates with your carrier – use one shipping carrier to get volume discounts.

2. Take advantage of social media channels (like LinkedIn®, Facebook® and Twitter™) to help promote your online store.

3. Ask vendors to give you products on consignment. This will free up operating cash.

4. Join entrepreneurial websites, like Ladies Who Launch, Small Business Development Center and SCORE®, for free articles and mentoring opportunities.

Becky is a mompreneur from St. Louis, MO. At night, she runs a successful online baby boutique, UltimateBabyBoutique.com, that has doubled its gross sales each of its last three years in business.
