Get the most out of networking.

Networking events and organizations are great ways to meet a group of people with similar interests who are open to opportunities to work together and help each other achieve a common goal. Networking also helps small business leaders talk to prospects and educate potential customers.

A valuable network is one that is alive and growing daily. Successful networking really comes down to your approach to networking, your ability to listen and to communicate effectively, and the relationships you build. Use these tips to get the most out of networking.

  • Set objectives
  • Update your business card
  • Join organizations and groups
  • Be prepared to listen
  • Take notes
  • Be sincere
  • Offer assistance
  • Store and manage contact data
  • Follow-up with new contacts
  • Stay in touch
  • Introduce contacts to each other
  • Give speeches
  • Host an event
  • Grow the relationship

Taking advantage of opportunities to improve business contacts is an asset few small businesses can afford to miss. Networking takes a great deal of time, energy, and money to do it well. It’s important to network effectively and that you meet your networking objectives. Make sure that the events and meetings you attend have the potential to help build relationships that will benefit both you and your contacts.

Due to my type of business which is very personal, image consulting and fashion styling, networking is imperative to me. I go to as many quality networking events as possible with an open mind and ready to help the people I make connections with. If it leads to a business deal, great, but I go to meet and try to connect different people whom otherwise may not have met.

Networking is a very effective media to interact with people and exchange your thoughts about a particular product…without it its simply impossible to promote your product, because of this many people whom we don't even know come in touch with us can show interest in our side…

I attend a number of Meetups and Tweetups. But I also network through Twitter and Facebook. I follow people on Twitter and Facebook that I like – due to their content/knowledge, etc. Then I make sure I share and retweet their information. That gives me a direct connection that I continue to nurture.
At networking events, it is very easy to migrate to the people you know, however – you already know them! So join a new circle, and introduce yourself. Remember, people LOVE to talk about themselves, so ask a lot of questions.
One more thing – a memorable business card can bring you to the top of the 'heap'. So make sure you work on a great, memorable design or format. I recommend Mini Moo cards at http://www.moo.com

We get the most out of networking so far by the local networking group we are members of. Almost every one of the 20+ members uses our service and they also refer us out to their network of friends and family.

I find the key to networking is have no fear. Go to large and small events, educational and social events and interact through the internet. Be friendly and don't be afraid to introduce yourself. At events, sit with folks you do not know. Listen to what others do and share what you do. If you don't understand what they do, ask them to describe their typical client. It will give you a better understanding on how you can help them and you will have better recall next time you see them.
