Bing Announces A New iPhone App, But What's With The Hoopla?

Microsoft’s new search engine has been on a roll over the past few months. After a well-covered launch, Bing announced a partnership with Yahoo and then announced that they would be going mobile. First it was the Blackberry and Android phones and now, just last week, Bing is set to be available to those with an iPhone for their use to conduct searches on the mobile web.

According to Microsoft, getting Bing on your iPhone is as simple as anything you might experience with mobile applications. It’s a free app that’s available via the App Store that carries with it some of the same features available on the Blackberry and Android platforms. Through it’s voice recognition software, the Bing app will allow for greater accessibility to search without resorting to actually typing in the search query. The software giant also touts that their search app integrates with their mapping system to allow for directions, searches via voice, and much more.

So the question remains as to whether this iPhone app for Bing will be the next biggest thing for people to have on their phones. I have tried their Blackberry option and I must say that I wasn’t impressed. However, that is probably because the interface of the app is a bit sluggish and not as clean as the iPhone.

Frankly, most of the apps that I have on my phone are much better off being on an iPhone. Nevertheless, as it comes to Bing’s mobile applications, I would say that I’m a bit hesitant towards adding in another app to my phone instead of simply adding the search engine option into my browser settings.

What I mean by this is like if you had a desktop application on your personal computer, you would rather control the search options from within the browser rather than by clicking on the desktop icon and having it open up an entirely new browser. At least that’s what I would want to do. Leveraging the existing setup that I have would have been a nice touch.

So what’s this all boil down to? Well there’s not much else to say about the Bing iPhone app. It’s going to make your ability to search for new things pretty easier & this may be a true statement now…that Bing is going to be a genuine discovery engine.
