These days the changing landscape of social media plus daily additions of new technologies is constant.  It can be an overwhelming experience for the average small business owner to wade through the multitude of options available.  Sure, everyone says you need to tweet this, blog that, form a group/fan page/profile, and provide a viable presence on the Internet.  This is what allows customers and clients alike to find you and your company.  But what does all of that really mean?  And for the novice beginner, how are you to know which options will maximize your potential and growth versus only take up time and resources with little to no results?  These are the burning questions that everyday small business owners face and need to answer in order to survive and thrive in our world today.  Below are just a few of the various social media issues one has to address so they may benefit from their resources.

  • Why Social Media? – You’re not just throwing your name onto the web but you are building relationships which will in turn help develop your marketing strategy and yield countless degrees of further connection.
  • Facebook – Easily the most recognizable social marketing site today with 500 million plus users and rapidly surpassing Google as the most visited site on the internet, it is important to learn the differences between fan pages and groups with the best practices shown that will grab your audience.
  • Twitter – Not just for updating your daily routine, you need the knowledge to set up a twitter account while shaping it to best reach your audience and focusing on the positive practices it offers plus the when/how on best practices when tweeting.
  • Social Media Strategy – Learn your market inside and out while defining the programs that will best suit you as you utilize the various social media channels.
  • The Extras – With the continued rising popularity of Foursquare, Social Gaming, Mobile apps, and newer entries it is imperative that you keep on top of the new media that arrives and determine which ones will prove beneficial to your own individual strategy.
  • Keeping on Top – Analytics will help you maintain control of your various Social Media strategies and with so many tools available it’s tough to keep track of your efforts and maximize your potential.

Social media only works well if people really follow the content that is being provided. I see a lot of Twitter streams that are 100% self-promotional advertising. That doesn't work, because it's not sufficiently interesting for “real people” to follow.
