Last Thursday, Network Solutions hosted a tweet chat on the importance of being a positive leader for small businesses. 84 members of the small business community joined the conversation on Twitter to ask questions and tweet their thoughts on leadership tactics, managing styles, and how to remain positive and optimistic in 2011. We were fortunate to have leadership expert and co-founder of SOBCon, Terry Starbucker (@starbucker) to lead the dialogue by providing his expertise and insights. The chat offered some very useful tips for small business owners looking to better lead their small business in the future:
- Leadership is always having one eye where you are going and one eye on those who are following you there.
Positivity always breeds more positivity. A leader that conveys a positive outlook makes everyone around him or her want to succeed. Be sure to temper your optimism with realism.- A leader must know how to give up the one thing they most likely worked so hard to get – control. Micromanaging is not leading – know the difference.
- Leaders have to think carefully how to coach those who have made a mistake – it never pays to admonish harshly.
- Hiring is all about trust. If you can’t trust the people you are hiring, you are hiring the wrong people. It is critical to put together the right team and focus them on a common goal.
- Critical thing to remember when hiring: never be afraid to hire someone smarter than you.
- Effective communication is based on the quality of your words, the tone of your delivery and the consistency of your message. Don’t try to impress anyone with big words. Plain English is more effective.
- Be aware of your non-verbal signals. Things like eye contact, facial expressions and posture are very important.
- Without good leadership, there is no productivity – only middling mediocrity. Good leaders always try to raise the bar and challenge their team to go higher.

- 3 tips for 2011: Don’t dive in head first; always take time for reflection before moving forward. Use the virtual “Q-Tip” – clean out your ears so you can listen more effectively. Commit to practicing patience, tolerance and engagement; take it down a notch and think about leadership Zen.
