85% of Americans now own a cellphone and more people are conducting their daily lives on mobile devices than ever before (see chart 1 below). Cell phone ownership rates among young adults illustrate the extent to which mobile phones have become a necessity of modern communications: fully 96% of 18-to-29 year olds own a cell phone of some kind.

According to Mobile Marketer, one out of four consumers today has a smartphone with Web browsing and application download capability, that number is expected to jump to one out of three in 2011. The mud bath involving Apple, Google, Microsoft, RIM (Blackberry), and a whole bunch of others including retailers such as Amazon and eBay should leave no one in doubt that mobile is the fastest-growing marketing medium.

Here are some ways in which you can market your business on Mobile devices:

Mobile-friendly Website: More customers are using smartphones to search for you. You need to make sure that the your content is coded to be read or found by people using devices on the go, with small screens and mobile browsers, search engines and operating systems. Some smartphones, for example, can’t read Flash content, which a lot of websites currently have.

SMS/text messages: A lot of businesses are already using SMS/text messages to stay in touch with their customers and send them special offers and discounts. It is free for you to build a list of mobile phone numbers of customers who are willing to receive text-message alerts or text-message coupons.

Location based services, Business Directory Listings: Make sure that your business is listed in different business directories, map and review sites and apps already popular with mobile users. If not, you can list basic details like your location, contact information and a short description for free on many sites and apps. Some examples include Google Maps, Yahoo Local, Bing Local Listings, Yelp and Foursquare.
