Small Businesses Plan to Hire in 2011… But What Are They Looking For?

by Connie Steele on March 8, 2011

It seems like the economy is starting to take a positive turn based on some of the recent job indicators that have come out from both big and small businesses.   With companies planning to ramp up hiring, what traits they are looking for?  For small businesses, there are certainly some specific ones based on the latest wave of the Small Business Success Index conducted by Network Solutions and the University of Maryland, Robert H. Smith School of Business.

We know small businesses wear several hats and it turns out they are looking for those who are flexible and agile like they are.   When it comes to who they feel is better suited to work in a small business environment, the ideal characteristics include the following:

  • Experience working in a small business
  • Flexible mindset
  • Broad skill set

For those who like structure, working in a small business probably won’t be the a good match.  What’s interesting is that a person’s level of education however doesn’t necessarily constitute a skew towards a better fit with a small or big business.

At the end of the day, employers are all about finding the right fit.  For small businesses in particular, the employee dynamics and contribution of every individual have even greater stakes on the bottom line.  Now is your business equipped to find the next set of employees ready to take your business to the next level?
