Book Review – 201 Great Ideas for Small Business by Jane Applegate

June 25th, 2009 ::

201-coverI love “List Books” and many of you who know me probably know why. Heck, I write a series called “Rules for Entrepreneurs”. This book, 201 Great Ideas for Small Business, which I was introduced to after BlogPotomac, is written by Jane Applegate.

Many of you will be familiar with Jane as founder and CEO of SBTV™ (Small Business Television) and SBTV.com, the Internet-based television network, and is a sought-after keynote speaker. Her “Succeeding in Small Business” column reaches 10 million readers weekly through major newspapers.

Covers all the bases

Books like these are great because I can flip through them and for the massive number of ideas, some I will say “done that”, some I will think “that is interesting” and others will be like “I never thought of that before, cool”.

This is her second book (Entrepreneurs Desk Reference was first) and Jane Applegate puts together 201 Great Ideas that cover topics like:

- Customer Service

- Management

- Time Management

- Technology

- Marketing

- Product Development

- Finance

My Sevent Favorite Great Ideas:

1.) Find a Mentor

2.) Hire an Enrolled Agent to Do Your Taxes

3.) Give to Charity

4.) Ask for two business cards – one for you and one to pass along to a colleague (the person will definitely remember you -awesome)

5.) Consider Telecommuting as an Option

6.) Demand Great Service from Vendors

7.) Plan “In” Days and “Out” Days

I found her advice well research and solid so that any entrepreneur at any stage of their business could glean something valuable and important to add to their day-to-day activities. Check it out at your local book store.
