As a fitness devotee, I’m always on the lookout for new ways to mix up my workout. And while this may surprise you, I’ve found one of the best ways to work in some new activity is when I’m traveling. Now, Reuters reports that more hotels are getting in on this game by offering guests a wider variety of fitness options on the road.
Any business traveler knows trekking down to a semi-deserted hotel gym in the wee hours of the morning or late at night is less than ideal (especially if you’re a woman). Hotels are finally catching on, and one new trend they’re getting in on is providing fitness equipment delivered to your room.
The Ritz-Carlton says yoga mats and Pilates DVDs are the most frequently requested fitness accessories, but the chain has also provided treadmills (folding ones) and recumbent bikes. Many luxury hotels offer personal training sessions, staff-led morning jogs, bike rentals and even exercise clothes and shoes in case you forgot to pack your own (the shoes have hygienic, disposable insoles).
A spokesperson for Ritz-Carlton cited in the article says fitness is business travelers’ number-two concern on the road (second only to business, of course). And the Sheraton chain recently revamped its fitness centers and expanded its in-room offerings after a survey of its guests showed that 62 percent were very interested in fitness activities while traveling.
Two factors are driving the trend: first, the growing number of women business travelers and second, the aging of the fitness-conscious baby boomers, who make up a big percentage of business travelers. And while this article focused on high-end chains, most likely this trend will trickle down to midscale business travel hotels in the coming years.
What’s the lesson? Whatever you want to help you stay fit on the road—from stretchy bands to hula-hoops to a trainer to lead you through a cardio workout—call the concierge and chances are, you can get it.
