7 Tips for Creating Your First Marketing Ebook

February 12th, 2013 ::

BooksIf you are about to write your first marketing ebook for your business, congratulations – it’s one of the best ways to share your expertise and build thought leadership. If done right, your ebook will educate and entertain – thus becoming highly shareable.

Here are 7 things to keep in mind as you write your first ebook:

1. Write in a conversational tone

Your ebook is the complete opposite of a doctoral dissertation, so keep the tone light, friendly, and conversational – talk to your readers, not at them.

2. Use stories

Open your ebook with a story to hook your reader, and illustrate your points with stories whenever possible. This will make your content more fun, interesting, and relatable – you want your reader to say, “Oh yeah, I have that problem too!”  – and then turn to you for the solution.

3. Teach your readers

Add tips, tricks, helpful hints, or other actionable information that your readers can easily do themselves. Highlight this information in the sidebar or at the bottom of the page.

4. Focus each page

Stick to one point per page – this will help ensure your layout is clean. If you have a lot of information about one particular topic, break the information out with subheads, and use one subhead per page.

5. Integrate visual elements

People respond to strong visuals, so include relevant images that emphasize your point and graphics that illustrate survey results or statistics. Use subheaders that stand out and a bold, easy-to-read font.

6. Add interactive elements

Since ebooks are digital, you can embed videos, surveys, or games – just make sure they are relevant and don’t overshadow your other content.

7. Write one strong call-to-action

Resist adding a call-to-action (CTA) to each page; your company name and website address are sufficient. Instead, write one strong CTA for the last page of your ebook.  Tie the CTA back to the subject of your ebook and explain the benefit of working with you or buying from you. Finally, make it easy for them to contact you – include your website address, an email address, phone number, and social media buttons.

5 Easy Ways to Improve Your Ebooks

August 9th, 2012 ::

Books

I read a lot of ebooks – especially about marketing and social media – and I see the same mistakes made over and over again.  Here are 5 easy ways to improve your eBooks:

1. Brevity

Don’t cover more than one topic per ebook – and don’t write just to increase the page count.

Instead, create one ebook for each topic you’d like to cover, and stick to shorter books that are quick for your reader to consume.

2. White Space

Don’t clutter pages with lots of ideas, graphs, images, headers and subheaders.

Instead, keep the reader focused on your content by leaving lots of white space – and including only one message per page.

3. Meaningful Images

Don’t add images for the sake of having a visual on each page.

Instead, add one image per message that enhances the reader’s understanding of your message.  It could be a graph, chart or statistic.

4. Consistent Style

Don’t let your ebook end up looking like a Crayola crayon factory and font designer had a fight.

Instead, keep your style minimal and consistent with one or two fonts, sizes, and colors used throughout. Use the same font, size and color for all headings, and a different font, size and color for all body content.

5. English Only

Don’t use acronyms, industry jargon or business cliches.

Instead, write as you would speak to someone outside of your industry who is intelligent but knows little (or nothing) about the topic you’re covering.

Beyond Social Media: 6 Digital Trends to Keep Your Eye On

August 6th, 2012 ::

Trends

While social media is often cited as the most important element to add to your marketing strategy, it is only one piece of the marketing pie, a marketing pie whose main ingredients are engagement and personal interaction.  Here are 6 other digital trends I have observed that all small business owners need to keep their eyes on – plus tips on how to take advantage of them.

1. Videos, Games and Apps

Blog posts, ebooks and how-to guides are incredibly important to your content strategy, but branded videos, games and apps do far more to pull in your audience.

Tip: Start with a 60-second, personable “explainer” video on your home page, and work your way up to a game or app as your budget allows.

2. Mobile Sharing

Location-based services are becoming more focused on actions, such as a “like” or sharing a link, than on check-ins.

Tip: Tweak your offers to include links to your social media accounts and website, where users can receive exclusive offers – and be pulled into your community.

3. Content Everywhere

With the use of tablets, smartphones and e-readers proliferating, so too is the consumption of video, podcasts, social media, games, ebooks, etc.

Tip: Diversify your content creation to include short videos and podcasts you create on your computer using the built-in camera – and stay active on social media (you knew I was going to mention that eventually!).

4. Mobile Optimization

Tablets and smartphones are increasingly the preferred way to access the Internet  and consume all types of content.

Tip: Develop a mobile site and offer the most popular content – optimized for mobile – on that site.

5. Advertising 2.0

I’m not talking about advertising online, but rather advertising masquerading as fun and engaging online and offline activities, such as viral videos, events and sponsorships.

Tip: Sponsorships aren’t just for Fortune 500 companies.  Find a local event to get involved with, and build your customer base by interacting with people in person at the event.

6. Mobile Sales

Mobile devices aren’t just being used for email and Internet access – they are also being used for online purchases.

Tip: Use geolocation to offer real-time deals, and make sure your ecommerce site is optimized for mobile.
