5 Ways to Build Social Links

July 2nd, 2012 ::

social links

Inbound links are the fuel for your company’s lead generating engine. With a little link building, you can increase your traffic and achieve better rankings for your website, and social media marketing is a low-cost way for small businesses to attract inbound links. This articles will show you five ways to build social links, courtesy of the folks at Hubspot.

1.  Guest Blogging

Guest blogging is an effective way to attract links because it gives you SEO benefits, along with access to a whole new audience. You can find guest blogging opportunities by asking permission to write an article for a website or blog that has a target audience relevant to your brand. Not only will you reach this new audience, but you can also build key relationships with others in your industry.

Research blogs you are interested in, and select only the most relevant ones. Give them your best work – resist saving your best posts for your own blog. Be sure to create a landing page to convert traffic you receive from your guest blogging efforts.

2.  Contests

Everyone likes a good contest, so the contests you create are likely to be shared, increasing brand exposure, links and leads. Giveaways attract traffic and generate buzz, especially when you give valuable prizes.

Choose which social network(s) to run your contest on, and provide clear, simple rules for participating. It’s a good idea to check with a lawyer regarding any sweepstakes regulations in your city or country. A simple winner selection system, like Random.org, will help you choose winners easily and fairly.

3.  Controversy

Nothing creates buzz faster than a good, old-fashioned controversy. When you cover a controversial topic on your blog, you are sure to attract more inbound links and social sharing. Be careful not to alienate readers or be offensive – your job is simply to start a debate on a topic people are interested in.

Select a topic that is very relevant to your audience that can be defended on both sides. Good topic candidates are current issues related to your industry that your audience will care about. You can monitor discussions on Digg or Reddit for ideas.

4.  Lists

Content based on “top lists” or “top resources” make for some of the most popular types of blog posts and attract tons of inbound links. These types of lists are easy to understand and quick to digest. They can be both entertaining and educational, and the format provides actionable steps for immediate results.

Ideas for effective lists include success stories, winning companies, inspiring quotes, and even subjects that are just for fun.

5.  How-To Content

Similar to lists, how-to content provides information people can use right away. People search for instructional information because it saves them time when trying something new. Well-written step-by-step instructions help your customers by giving them a short-cut to a proven strategy in a format that’s easy to digest.

To create successful how-to content, be sure to do your research, take the perspective of teaching someone from scratch, and make the content accessible by distilling the huge amount of information on the web that your customers would rather not sift through.

These are just some of the ways to build social links that generate brand awareness and leads for your business. Have you successfully tried any of these tactics? How did it work out for you? Share your ideas and comments in the box below.

7 Ways to Integrate Social Media with Your Marketing Plan

December 8th, 2011 ::

Social media and marketing plans

Social Media B2B recently published a fantastic blog post with very practical tips for integrating social media into your marketing plan.  I have added to their tips other ideas I have seen used – or used myself – to bring you these 7 straightforward ways to improve your marketing efforts across the board.

1. Put your website in sync with your marketing plan.

If you are promoting something via social media – from a white paper to an ebook, guide, free trial or sample, or demo – make sure you send people somewhere on your website where they will find what they are looking for.  It could be a landing page specifcially created for the campaign, or just an existing page on your website.  Whatever it is, you need to make sure that it will lead people through the necessary steps they need to follow to get whatever it is you are promoting.

2.  Make it easy for visitors to discover useful content.

Once you have someone on your website, whether it is that campaign-specific landing page or an existing page, keep them there with more useful content.  Add links to additional content they might like, like other blog posts, ebooks, free samples, etc.

3. Add social buttons everywhere.

Add links to your social profiles wherever it makes sense – your blog, home page, landing pages, “contact us” page, and even in your team’s bios (linking to their accounts, obviously – as long as they are using them for work-related purposes only).  Make sure you tell your Web visitors what kind of information they can expect to receive when they follow you on Facebook or Twitter.

4. Support advertising.

If traditional print advertising still generates enough leads to make it cost-effective, don’t stop.  Help it deliver an even higher return on investment by creating a blog post that provides more information on what you mentioned in the ad.  You can also add a QR code to the ad that links to a page on your website.

5. Socialize email.

Go beyond adding social media buttons to valuable email marketing messages.  Use social media to ask people to sign up for your email list and announce when those emails are going out.

6. Generate leads with keywords.

Search Twitter and LinkedIn for keywords that aren’t just industry-specific, but pain-point-specific as well.  People complain about problems when they are looking for a solution, so take advantage of that!

7. Promote events.

Promote events on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and, if you are a bricks-and-mortar business, Foursquare.  Add links to information in a blog post, a landing page with more information, and/or a site where they can RSVP or buy tickets  (like EventBrite).  If you use Foursquare, add a special badge for the event – or a special badge for your best customers only.

6 Cool Startups That Can Help Your Small Business Grow

October 13th, 2011 ::

TreeAs editor at Tech Cocktail, I get to learn about a lot of really interesting startups, so I thought I’d share six companies that we’ve recently covered that can help your small business grow.

1. Qidiq: For Surveys

If you want to survey your customers, prospective customers, vendors and/or employees, try out Qidiq.  Their platform lets you survey people via email and see the results nearly instantly.

Simply put together your list of questions and send them off via email or text. Your questions can be answered yes/no, with a 5-star rating, or as multiple choice.  No matter which method you use, your respondents can answer with one click and add a comment.  Unlike standard surveys, the question is right in the email.

The best part? You can space out your questions over several days so you are not overwhelming the people on your list.

2. Yesware: For Sales

Want to close more business?  Silly question – of course you do! Yesware is an email productivity service that integrates into Gmail and your mobile phone and provides email analytics, customizable templates and more to help salespeople respond to customers more effectively.

Want to save time?  Yesware also helps reduce data entry into CRMs like SalesForce, Sugar, Zoho, Basecamp, Landslide and others.

3. Ohours: For Office Hours

The founder of Tech Cocktail just tried this out in New York City at the Ace Hotel Lobby Bar, and I actually got to see it in action when I stopped by to say hi.  He loved it so much that I’m going to try it when I am in Chicago, Denver and San Francisco this fall.

Ohours makes scheduling office hours super easy.  Sign up via Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn and schedule blocks of time that you can tweet or share.  Anyone can sign up to meet with you.

4. OneSky: For Translation

If you want to go global, check out OneSky, which helps streamline the translation of websites and apps by connecting you to translation agencies.  They also have a really cool crowdsourcing option.  You can ask for smoother, more seamless translations, which then get voted on.  If you’d like, you can then use the new text that wins the most votes.

5. Profitably: For Business Planning

If you want to succeed, you need to have a plan, but putting one together, well, it usually takes a backseat to other stuff – like doing what you actually do.  Profitably is a Web-based platform that can help you plan for the future.  You can try out its revenue forecasting and planning features for free, but if you want to really go beyond the basics and include measurement and tracking features, you can sign up for a plan for as low as $33.33 a month.  Not much of an investment for doing something that can ultimately pay huge dividends.

6. Onepager: For Setting Up a Website Fast

If time and budget constraints have stopped you from putting together a website, why not put together a simple landing page?  Onepager is a very easy and simple way to create and maintain a visually appealing website.  Just enter your company name, logo, tagline, content about who you are and what you do, and you’re good to go.  You can customize the page a bit with themes, style and layout options, and also add photos, a newsletter sign up, hours, contact info and social media buttons. I tried it out, and it took me all of 10 minutes.

Onepager is really inexpensive, too: only $10/month for a month-to-month subscription or $8/month if you sign up for a whole year. That price includes hosting and unlimited bandwidth, which is a great deal.

7 Reasons to Start Using Posterous for Online Marketing

June 1st, 2011 ::

I have a serious love-hate relationship with social media, mostly because it can be a time-suck, so anything that makes managing or using social media easier, I’m all over.  And because I’m a big texter and emailer, I really only use social media when absolutely necessary (haven’t been on my personal Facebook page much in a couple of
months, and I miss it exactly this much).

7So this is basically my way of saying that I just discovered Posterous, and it’s awesome.  The service lets you manage more than 20 social media platforms simply by sending an email.  You can update LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Picasa, YouTube – and the list goes on.  For small business owners crunched on time but devoted to social media marketing, this is a lifesaver.

Here are 6 more reasons to use Posterous:

1. It is ridiculously easy to use. To do anything, from opening an account to updating social media accounts to sharing an article, you just email post@posterous.com.  If you only want to update one social media account, like Twitter, you email twitter@posterous.com.

2. Customize it to your heart’s content. Posterous has a layout similar to a blog, complete with a customized url.  You can customize the look, too; always nice
to have that option (this is one of the reasons I hate Facebook—everyone’s page looks the same because there’s only one layout).

3. Add pages, just like on a website. I’m looking around Posterous, and I found the account for a DJ I’ve never heard of, but that doesn’t matter.  His site is great.  He has 10 pages set up on his account, including a Dates page listing upcoming performances and a Media page containing videos of him performing.

You can add links to a ton of stuff about you: blog posts you’ve written, websites you’re associated with, content on Slideshare, whatever.  And of course you can also create an About Me page.

4. Easy way to set up an online photo album. When you email a photo or photos, a photo gallery is automatically created.   No more downloading photos from smart phone or camera to hard drive that you then have to upload to whatever site.

5. Write and publish blog posts from your smart phone. Forget dragging a laptop around with you to events just so you can blog about what’s happening.  The whole email thing makes it possible to write and publish blog posts when you’re at a conference, meeting, seminar, etc.  Just write a blog post in an email and send it off.  It’s instantly published.

6. Engagement made easy. You can set up your Posterous account so you will receive alerts via email if someone DMs you from Twitter or posts to one of your other social media accounts.  Super handy when you’re on the go and not sitting in front of the computer all day.

The only downside: Their mobile app is available only for the iPhone and Android.

Now that I’m done drooling all over Posterous, do you think you’ll start using it?

6 Ways Your Blog Can Build Your Social Media Audience

April 11th, 2011 ::

While blogging is often used to increase search visibility, establish expertise on a topic, and drive traffic to your website, it’s not often used to build your audience on social media, whether you are trying to build up your Twitter following, Facebook fans, or status on Tumblr.  It’s a lost opportunity, as there is really nothing better than building on an audience you already have.  (Of course, this can work in the other direction too—use social media to build up your blog audience.)

When building your social media following, just remember that quality of fans totally trumps quantity.  And by quality, I mean the kinds of fans who engage with you, retweet your tweets, comment on Facebook posts, post to your Facebook wall, and, of course, become customers!

Let’s start with two very basic, common-sense things you need to do:

1. Add social share buttons at the bottom of each blog post to make it easy for your blog readers to spread the word about your fabulous blog and build awareness of your social media presence.

2. Add social media icons on every page of your website, especially if your website and blog are one and the same, which is becoming more and more common.  Make as easy as possible for people to follow you on social media.

And here are four common-sense things you might not have thought of:

1. Promote your social media presence (with links to the accounts) in the bio you supply for guest blogging gigs.  You’ll be reaching a whole new audience, and if they like what you wrote, hopefully they’ll feel compelled to connect with you on social media.

2. At the end of blog posts, add a link to the social media account you’d most like to promote, asking that people follow you there.  This sounds so simple, but you will be amazed by what you can achieve just by asking.

3. Mention your social media accounts in blog posts.  We’ve all got so much going on that we cannot remember everything, even if we have the best of intentions.

4. Reference tweets or Facebook posts, either from you or your audience, in your blog posts when relevant.  Add screen shots if you can.  You can also build entire blog posts around the conversations that are happening on Twitter and Facebook between you and your audience.  People are very lemming-like, so the more you show your engagement on social media, the more people will want to be a part of all the fun you are having.

Blogs, Videos, and Websites: More Online Marketing Success Stories

February 14th, 2011 ::

In my last blog post, I wrote about a recent ebook from HubSpot called 11 Examples of Online Marketing Success.  It was written by David Meerman Scott, who is a wonderful source of useful information, and this ebook is definitely useful.  My favorite thing about it is the companies that are featured.  While most of them are in very blah industries, their success stories are exciting and inspiring.

Here is what I learned from a manufacturer that used an optimized blog, a medical billing and EMR provider that used a viral video, and an author that used an audience-centric website to energize their online marketing effortsPeople jumping:

Search Rankings and Sales Improve With an Optimized Blog

Agilent Technologies, a company that manufactures and sells life sciences and chemical analysis tools and electronic tests and measurement tools (I know, super exciting stuff), was having a problem ranking for a specific keyword, signal integrity, even though they are in a very niche industry.

To fix this, their head of marketing decided to start blogging in a very thoughtful and targeted way.  He didn’t create a company blog; instead, he created an industry blog based on signal integrity that was fully optimized for search: The blog domain is consistent with Web page titles and the content in each blog post.  (Check yours to see if that’s true for your blog posts!  In the top navigation bar, the name of your blog plus the title of the blog post should appear.)

Because they are publishing useful, relevant content and optimizing the blog with keywords for search, the blog is yielding great results.  Agilent ranks high in search engines because of the blog, and the blog ranks on the first page of Google for signal integrity and is generating qualified leads.  Just as awesome is the fact that journalists at industry publications are reading the blog and back-linking to it, which search engines reward.

The Power of One Viral Video

Producing just one video that is fun, creative, and engaging can have far-reaching results, as Nuesoft Technologies learned this past fall.  Again, this is a company in a very un-sexy industry: they provide medical billing solutions and electronic medical records (EMR).  Yawn.

But check out what they did: Their IT department produced and distributed a really funny parody video of Lady Gaga’s song Poker Face called Interface.  Watch it!  When I viewed it, they were just short of 8,000 views.

Their goal with the video was simple: increase online visibility within the industry.  They got that, and a whole lot more: 3 of the most important industry blogs wrote about the video, and it was shared virally on Facebook, generating a lot of comments and likes.  In an industry of 400 competitors, they are one of the very few who have taken video marketing to the next level.  As a result, they now stand out in a very crowded marketplace.

Complete Website Overhaul Leads to Inbound Marketing Success

If your website is a static, brochure site that is not optimized for search and lacks engaging, useful content, keep reading!  Victor Conshin wrote the number one book on gout (yes, gout) called Beating Gout: A Sufferer’s Guide to Living Pain Free.  (I didn’t even know what gout was until I read this success story.)  His original website was a huge failure, and not because the design was horrible (it was fine), but it was not ranked, very hard to find, and contained no interesting content.  It was just a boring, product-focused brochure.

He completely redid his website to make it audience-focused.  It is now optimized for search, answers gout FAQs, and provides the latest news in the food and drug industry.  Traffic has doubled, and his bounce rate has gone down significantly, which means people are exploring his site beyond the home page.  As a result, book sales have increased and the site now ranks on the first page of a Google search.

9 Reasons to Choose Network Solutions

February 4th, 2011 ::

Every company today, no matter their size and or industry, must have a visible online presence if they want to grow.  You need a website that is optimized for search, has e-commerce capabilities, and has tight security to protect customer information.  You need a mobile website so people who are using their smartphones to conduct research online can find you.  You need a blog and social media integration.

Choosing a company to host, design and support your website can be a nerve-wracking decision.

You could choose a company based on their celebrity spokesperson.

You could choose one based on how cute their mascot is.

You could choose one by playing eeny-meeny-miny-moe.

Or, you could choose a company that has been doing this for years, that you can trust, that delivers value, that resolves issues quickly, and that can support your online marketing efforts.

Here’s why you should choose Network Solutions:

Everything is under one roof. No need to use a handful of Web and online service providers.  Network Solutions offers e-mail hosting; Web hosting, design, and support; e-commerce hosting and design; merchant accounts; SSL certificates; graphic design services; online marketing services; and mobile website design and hosting.  In other words, if you need it in order to have a successful online presence, Network Solutions offers it.

Their website is easy to navigate.  Some e-commerce websites are so cluttered with information and graphics that you can’t find what you’re looking for.  Network Solutions has made it easy to find exactly what you need, and they clearly explain the benefits and features of their products.

Ordering is a snap. On some e-commerce sites, you can barely place your order because so many new products are thrown at you on the checkout page.  Not at Network Solutions!  They don’t want to confuse you; they want to help you and make you happy.

They are innovative. Network Solutions is continually tweaking their products and services and rolling out new ones, like the .ASIA domain extension, goMobi™ mobile website builder, and a new domain validation SSL certificate called the nsProtect™ Secure Xpress Certificate.

They provide great customer service. The reps are friendly, helpful, and able to answer questions or solve issues quickly, whether by e-mail or phone.

They continually offer great promotions.  Not only is Network Solutions’ pricing competitive, but they run special promotions all the time.  Right now, for instance, the domain validation SSL certificate is 40% off and annual hosting packages are 50% off.

They understand small businesses. Together with the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, Network Solutions created the Small Business Success Index to measure how small businesses view their capital management, marketing and innovation, human capital, customer service, IT deployment, and compliance.  The latest study can be accessed via the Small Business Success Index website.

They are a great resource for small businesses. Trying to figure out how to run your business, use social media and grow?  Through this blog, their main blog, and their Women Grow Business blog, Network Solutions provides small businesses owner with the latest information, resources, tips and trends.

They offer a vetted list of vendors and resources for small businesses. Need financing, help setting up an LLC, a CRM, or someone to write your business plan?  Check out their list of partners.

They also clearly have a great sense of humor.  You will smile, and probably laugh out loud, when you watch this Network Solutions parodyvideo  http://bit.ly/gogranny

How to Use Contest As An Effective Inbound Marketing Tool

April 30th, 2010 ::

I love participating in contests.  The idea of getting something great for free has a magnetic pull on me, as it does for many people.   You can sponsor a big contest (Win a Trip to NYC and a $1,000 Shopping Spree!) or a small one (Win a 30 Minute Massage!)—it doesn’t really matter.  As long as you are giving away something people want, a contest is a great way to drive leads and boost your inbound marketing program.

To get the message out as widely as possible, cross-promote your contest on your website, in your e-signature, on the social media platforms you’re using, and in your newsletter and/or blog.  People have short memories, so be sure to mention the contest fairly often.  And remember that the whole reason you are giving something away is to attract new customers.  You’ll want to capture their name, company name (if applicable), address, phone number, and/or email address so you can add them to your database.

I have shoes on my mind as I write this, so let’s say I own a children’s shoe store that specializes in high-quality European and American-made shoes.  I am going to give away a different pair of shoes every month.  Here’s what I’d do:

Set up microsite. I’d add a microsite to my website and use it as the contest page.

Follow me. From my microsite, I’d ask people to follow me on Twitter and Facebook, even though those badges are already on my website.

Subscribe to newsletter or blog. Right under the form that people fill out to enter the contest, I’d ask people if they’d like to receive my e-newsletter and/or blog.

Spread message to friends on FB or Twitter. Once people have submitted the contest form, a new page would open up and I’d ask them if they’d like to tell their friends on Facebook and Twitter about the contest.  I’d provide links to both social media platforms that includes the link back to the contest microsite.

Link contest page to website. When people are done telling their friends about the contest, I’d add a “Finish” button to the page.  When they click on it, they’d be automatically redirected to the home page of my website.

Publicize results of contest. Without revealing too much information about the winner (first name, city, and state at most), I’d publicize the results of the contest everywhere and include a quote from the winner.  Great way to build community!
