File Manager Setup Guide

What is Network Solutions® File Manager?

File management is key to all computer systems, from basic home PC's to elaborate servers. A well-structured system of files not only enables you to find resources quickly and easily, but also lets you provide web access to files you wish to make accessible online.

File Manager® is a web-based program that allows you to completely manage your Web site without the need for FTP. File Manager provides you with numerous management options not found in FTP programs.

Files are organized using directories (folders). Directories contain files and other directories. When using File Manager, you have one root directory that contains all other directories and files. Your Web site content is stored in a main directory called htdocs.  (On Windows 2008 servers this folder will be labled "www".  If you purchased a Windows hosting package after 9/6/2012 you are on a Windows 2008 server.)

Getting Started

Please Note: Using File Manager is not necessary if you created a Web site using ImageCafe®. Web site files will be automatically updated each time you make and publish changes.

Log in to Account Manager

1. Login to your account: http://www.networksolutions.com.  If you've forgotten your log-in information, please visit: https://www.networksolutions.com/manage-it/forget-login.jsp.

2. Click My Products & Services in the top navigation

3. Click My Hosting Package link

Note: If you have multiple hosting packages, click the appropriate package

4. Click on the Web Hosting Toolbox button

5. Under the FTP/Content Publishing section click on the File Manager icon

6. Click htdocs.  (On Windows 2008 servers this folder will be labled "www".  If you purchased a Windows hosting package after 9/6/2012 you are on a Windows 2008 server.)

Components of File Manager

There are three main components of File Manager:

  • Toolbar (displayed at the top of the page)
  • Files Menu (the list of directories, files and statistics located in the middle of the page)
  • Command Bar (displayed at the bottom of the page)

Toolbar 

In the top left corner of the Toolbar is the name of the directory you are currently viewing.

Please Note: Files and folders pertaining to your Web site will be contained in the htdocs directory.  (On Windows 2008 servers this folder will be labled "www".  If you purchased a Windows hosting package after 9/6/2012 you are on a Windows 2008 server.)

All files and folders (directories) contained within this directory will be displayed in the Files Menu.

Functions found on the Toolbar include:

  • Upload
  • New File
  • New Folder
  • Search
  • Replace

Upload

To upload files and folders from your local computer to File Manager:

1. Click Upload.

2. Click Browse to search your local computer for the file.

3. Select a file or folder and click Open.

4. Click Upload.

To upload multiple files, click Multiple Upload.

The file or folder will appear in the Files Menu.

Please Note:  If uploading large files, keep in mind that sessions lasting more than 120 seconds will result in a "500 Internal Server Error". If this occurs, use an FTP client such as CuteFTP or your web browser to upload files to the FTP server.

Compressed File Upload

To upload a compressed or .zip file:

1. Click Upload.

2. Click Browse at the bottom of the page to the compressed file.

3. Select the compressed file and click Open.

4. Click Upload.

To uncompress the file, click on it.

By default, all files within the file have been selected.

Click Go to display each file in the Files Menu

New File 

When you create a new file, you have the ability to insert and edit text using the text editor provided.

To create a new file:

1. Click New File.

2. Add text using the text editor.

3. Create a name for the file.

4. Click Save after naming the file.

 Please Note: When naming a new file, it's important to use an extension such as .doc, .txt. or .gif. Never leave an open space between words or numbers when naming files. If you want to separate words, use an underscore (_).

A properly named file should look like this: Test_file.doc

The new file will appear in the Files Menu.

New Folder

To create a new folder (directory):

 

1. Click New Folder.

2. Use the open field at the bottom of the page to create a new folder name.

3. Click Create.

A properly named folder should look like this: Test_folder

The new folder will appear in the Files Menu.

Search

To search for specific files within folders (directories):

1. Click Search.

2. Type in the word or phrase you want to search for.

If you want to search for a file name, select Case Sensitive.

If you want to search through the contents of files and folders, select Expression. The Search Contents box will be automatically checked.

 3. Click Search.

A list of files containing specific words or phrases will be compiled in the middle of the page.

To return to the Files Menu, click Back at the top of the files and folders list.

Replace 

 Please Note: This function only works for .txt files. 

To search for a specific string of text and replace it with a new string of text:

1. Click Replace.

2. Select the files that include the string of text you want to replace or select All of htdocs.  (On Windows 2008 servers this folder will be labled "www".  If you purchased a Windows hosting package after 9/6/2012 you are on a Windows 2008 server.)

3. Type in the string of text you want to replace in the first open field. Type in the new string of text in the second open field.

The options located underneath the open fields in the replace box allow you to target specific files. For example, if you want to replace case sensitive strings of text, select Case Sensitive.

If you want to replace a string of text located within the contents of a file, select Expression.

If you want to replace entire words, select Whole Words Only. This option will only include the exact word typed in the open field, it will not replace similar words or plural versions of these words.

If you want to replace a string of text, but you also want to maintain a copy of the file in its original state, click Create .bak. Two files will appear in the Files Menu.

4. Click Replace.

 

Files Menu 

The Files Menu displays the files and folders (directories) within the htdocs directory and provides detailed information about each of them.  (On Windows 2008 servers this folder will be labled "www".  If you purchased a Windows hosting package after 9/6/2012 you are on a Windows 2008 server.)

The categories used in the Files Menu include:

  • View
  • Name
  • Size
  • File Type
  • Modified
  • Owner
  • Permissions

 

View

Use the icons in this column to determine the type of files and folders contained in the Files Menu.  

Click the icon beside a desired file or directory to open it.

Click the View heading to sort the files and directories by type.

Name

The names of all directories and files are displayed in this column. Click the name of a file or folder to open it. Click the Name heading once to sort files and folders (directories) in ascending order. Click the Name heading a second time to sort files and folders (directories) in descending order.

Size

File sizes are listed in this column. Click the Size heading once to sort files by size in ascending order. Click the Size heading a second time to sort files in descending order.

File Type

The file type of each file and folder (directory) is listed in this column. Click the File Type heading once to sort files and directories by file type in ascending order. Click the File Type heading a second time to sort in descending order.

Modified

The date each file or directory was last modified is listed in this column. Click the Modified heading once to sort files and directories by modification date in ascending order. Click the Modified heading a second time to sort in descending order.

Owner

The username of the owner of each file and directory is listed in this column. Click the Owner heading once to sort files and directories in ascending order. Click the Owner heading a second time to sort in descending order.

Permissions 

Please Note: This function will not work if File Manager is running on a Windows server.

The permission settings of each file and folder (directory) are listed in this column. Click the Permissions heading to sort files and directories by permission settings in ascending order. Click the Permissions heading a second time to sort them in descending order.

Click on the permission settings of a specific file or directory to display a form that allows you to modify the file or directory's permission settings by checking individual permissions or by entering the numeric code for the desired permissions. This form can be found at the bottom of the page.

Please Note: The checkboxes to the left of the Files Menu allow you to select files or folders (directories) for the commands found in the Command Bar. Click the checkbox at the top of the menu automatically selects all displayed files and folder (directories).

 

Command Bar

The Command Bar allows you to perform commands and actions to the files and directories you have selected in the Files menu.

Functions found on the Command Bar include:

  • Edit
  • Download
  • Copy
  • Delete
  • Move
  • CHMOD
  • Diff.
  • Print


Edit

 

Click Edit to open the file you select from the Files Menu. Edit the file using the text editor provided.

Download

To download files from File Manager to your local computer:

1. Click Download.

2. Select the file or folder (directory) you want to download.

3. Click Download.

4. Select Open to view the file (or folder) or Save to save the file or folder to your desktop. If saving the file to your desktop, create a file name and click Save.

The file or folder can now be found on your desktop. A copy of the file or folder will remain in File Manager unless you delete it.

Please Note: If you are downloading multiple files or folders, you will have to select a compression type from the menu at the bottom of the page.

Please Note: If your server does not have extension modules that will handle the various compression types, compression types will not be available. Contact your system administrator if you need to have them installed.

Copy

To make a copy of a file or folder:

1. Select the file or folder you want to make a copy of.

2. Click Copy

3. Type in the folder (directory) where the copy will be placed. 

4. Click Copy.

Delete

Select files or folders (directories) to remove and click Delete. Click OK to permanently delete the selected file or folder. 

Move

1. Select the files or folders (directories) to move from one directory to another.

2. Click Move.

3. Type the name of the folder (directory) where the files or folders will be placed in the open field at the bottom of the page.

4. Click Move

Chmod 

Please note:  The CHMOD feature is not available for Windows accounts.

To view/change file and folder permissions:

1. Select the files and folders to be checked in the Files Menu.

2. Click Chmod.

3. Enter in a numerical permissions value or select individual permissions.

4. Click Chmod to update file and folder permissions.

Diff 

This function is useful when reviewing files that are updated often. 

Please Note: This function will only work for text-based files, such as .txt or .html files.

To compare the content of two files:

1. Select a file from the Files Menu.

2. Click Diff. 

3. Type the name of the second file in the open field provided.

4. Click Diff.

The differences between the two files will be displayed in a new screen.

Print 

Select the file you want to print and click Print.

If you select multiple files to be printed, you will be given the option of printing them separately or as one document.
