Domain Names

What is a domain name?

A domain name is your personal or business address on the Internet. Many times users will select a domain that reflects their business or personal identity. For example, our company name is Network Solutions and you found us at our domain name NetworkSolutions.com.

If you want to personalize your Web site, you should register a domain at the time of your hosting purchase. Remember your domain is free when you make an annual hosting purchase.

Who can help me create and host my site?

Network Solutions has tools for both new users and experienced users. We have created free tools like ImageCafé® Web Site Creator, a template tool for Web site creation to guide you through the creative process.

On top of the guides and tools we provide, Network Solutions also offers Professional Web Site Design services. We'll design and build your Web site to meet your needs.

As always, our customer service team is available 24/7 to answer any question by calling 1.866.391.4357, or by visiting our online support center at http://customersupport.networksolutions.com/.

Can I use any computer with my Web hosting service?

  • You can use a personal computer or laptop computer and you can also access your services from any computer around the world – all you need is an Internet connection, a web browser, your username and your password.

Data Transfer

What is Data Transfer?

Data Transfer is the amount of data transmitted over an Internet connection in a given time. It is used up by traffic to your Web site and also sending and receiving e-mail. For example if someone views a 1MB Web page on your site 1MB of data transfer is used. If 10 people view it then 10MB of transfer will be consumed. If you send an e-mail with a 2MB attachment it will use 2MB of data transfer. The amount of transfer that you require while choosing a host depends on two factors:

  1. The size of your site and
  2. The popularity of your site.

If your Web site provides large audio/video files, computer programs, and audio / video downloads then you should consider a package with a large amount of data transfer. For example, if you have a video file that is 1.5 MB in size and 1000 visitors download the file during one day. This means that 1.5 GB (1.5MB * 1000 visitors) of transfer will have been used. If you multiply that by 30 days for the month it comes to 45 GB.

Flash Web sites and Virtual Reality (VR) sites require the most transfer of all.

FTP

Introduction to FTP

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is needed to transfer files from one computer to another.

In order to publish or update your Web site, you have to transfer Web pages, images and other files to your host server. FTP makes this transfer quick and easy.

Network Solutions® offers a variety of options when it comes to transferring Web content:

  • ImageCafé® Web Site Builder Tool
  • FTP File Publisher
  • File Manager
  • Ability to use other FTP programs

Network Solutions ImageCafé Web Site Builder Tool

If you use Network Solutions ImageCafé Web Site Builder Tool to create a Web site, you do not have to use an FTP program to transfer these files. After building your site, click Publish and the site will go live.

To make changes to the site, update current pages from ImageCafé and click Publish when finished.

Network Solutions FTP File Publisher

Please Note: You do not need your FTP Account Username or password to access FTP File Publisher.

Network Solutions FTP File Publisher is an easy-to-use FTP program that comes with your Web hosting account.

When using FTP File Publisher®, you will be able to upload and download files/folders to and from a local computer or remote server. You can also create new files/folders, rename or delete files/folders, and reset file permissions (to default settings only).

Network Solutions File Manager

Please Note: You do not need your FTP Account Username or password to access FTP File Publisher.

Network Solutions File Manager® is a web-based program that allows you to completely manage your Web site without the need for FTP. File Manager provides you with numerous management options not found in FTP programs.

This feature is also available with your Web hosting account.

With File Manager, you will be able to manage existing files/folders, create new files/folders, edit file content, and reset individual file permissions (Unix platforms only, cannot change permissions if using Windows). File Manager also allows you to upload large files.

To learn more about Network Solutions File Manager, go to the (Link to File Manager Setup Guide) or watch our File Manager video demonstrations.

FTP Programs

FTP Programs such as Cute FTP® or SmartFTP® can also be used to upload files/folders to your Web site.

You will need to access the FTP Account Manager page to find your Username and change your password as this information is needed to install the FTP program.

**Note:  Once your FTP password has been set you will be unable to view your password, please commit your password to memory.

If you want to use a Web site creation program like DreamWeaver®, you will need to use an FTP program to transfer Web pages and other files you create.

It not recommended that you use FTP File Publisher® or File Manager® to upload files created using these software programs.

If you need more information about certain FTP programs and how to install them, please visit our FTP Application video demonstrations.
