Why Can't I See All My Folders in My IMAP Program?

Some email client software requires that you first subscribe to the folders on the IMAP server before you can view them. Below are the instructions for the most common email client software. If your folders do not automatically sync and your software is not listed below, please consult with your software vendor's support documentation.

 

Email Software Compatible with IMAP syncronization

 

 

Microsoft Outlook 2003 / 2007, Microsoft Outlook Express, Windows Mail

  1. Right click on the root IMAP folder (displayed as 'mail.yourdomain.ext') in the 'Mail Foders' list on the left of the screen and click 'IMAP Folders'
    1. For Outlook 2003 or 2007
      1. Click on Querey
      2. Select all folders from the list and click 'Subscribe'
      3. Click 'OK'
    2. For Outlook Express and Windows Mail
      1. Select all folders
      2. click 'show'
      3. Click 'OK'
  2. Your folders should now be displayed in the Mail Folders list under the root IMAP folder

 

Thunderbird

  1. Right click on your 'Inbox'
  2. In the context menu click on 'Subscribe'
  3. If you have sub-folders, click on the '+' symbol next to each folder to display its sub-folders.
  4. Check the boxes next to each of the folders that you want to subscribe to
  5. Click 'Subscribe', and then click 'Ok'

 

Opera Mail

  1. In the menu bar across the top Go to 'Mail' à 'IMAP Folders'
  2. Under Accounts, select your nsMail account.
  3. Check the boxes next to the folders that you want to subscribe to
  4. Click 'Ok'.

 

Evolution

  1. In the main menu across the top of the Evolution window, open the Folder submenu.
  2. Click on 'Subscriptions'.
  3. In the 'Server' box in the Folder Subscriptions window, choose your nsMail account.
  4. Scroll down the list of folders and put a check in the check box beside any you want to subscribe to.
  5. Click on the Refresh button.
  6. Click on Close.

 

Eudora (Windows)

  1. First, make sure that Eudora is showing you your IMAP mailbox list by going to Tools > Mailboxes. A list of mailboxes should appear in the left margin of the Eudora window.
  2. Now, right click on the heading of Dominant (or any other IMAP account heading) and select Refresh Mailbox List from the contextual menu. The mailbox list will be updated to show any additional folders that were created outside of the Eudora email program.

 

Eudora (Mac)

  1. From Eudora's Window menu, select Mailboxes.
  2. Click the right-pointing triangle to the left of Dominant (or another account if you have more than one) to reveal the available IMAP folders.
  3. Now, click on the far right icon at the bottom of the mailbox list and select, Refresh Mailbox List from the menu. The updated list of IMAP folders should now be displayed.

  

Apple Mail

  1. Go to Mail > Preferences and select Accounts.
  2. Highlight you email account and click the Advanced tab.
  3. Place a check next to the option to Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes.
  4. Close the Preferences and save the changes when prompted.
  5. Now, quit Mail and relaunch it.
  6. If you mailbox list is not showing, go to the View menu and select Show Mailboxes and click on the right-pointing triangle to the left of your account heading to reveal your IMAP folders.

 

Entourage

  1. Open Entourage and select your account in the left margin to view its available IMAP folders.
  2. On the toolbar, click on the Update List button.
  3. From the View menu, make sure there is no check mark next to Subscribed Only. If there is, click on it once to uncheck it. Your full list of folders should be displayed.
