256-Bit Encryption

Encryption is the process of changing data into a form that can be read only by the intended receiver. 256 Bit SSL is referred to as strong SSL security. The 256 Bit Encryption tells users that the size of the encryption key used to encrypt the data being passed between a Web browser and Web server is 256 Bits in size. Because the size of the 256 Bit key is large it is computationally unfeasible to crack and hence is known as strong SSL security.

Browser Compatibility

Network Solutions SSL Certificates are compatible with over 99% of Web browsers which means that most existing browsers recognize a given Certificate and thus secure transactions can take place on those browsers. This ensures that your nsProtect™ Secure SSL Certificate will work on most browsers being used to view your site.

Certification Authority

Certification Authorities (CA) are third-party verifiers that authorize and endorse the legitimacy of websites. Browsers inherently trust an SSL Certificate if it is current and is issued by a reputable CA since trusted CAs will only issue Certificates to websites after validating the legitimacy of that site.

Data Encryption

Encryption is the process of changing data into a form that can be read only by the intended receiver. To decipher the message, the receiver of the encrypted data must have the proper decryption key. In traditional encryption schemes, the sender and the receiver use the same key to encrypt and decrypt data. Public-key encryption schemes use two keys: a public key, which anyone may use, and a corresponding private key, which is possessed only by the person who created it. With this method, anyone may send a message encrypted with the owner's public key, but only the owner has the private key necessary to decrypt it. The 256 Bit tells users that the size of the encryption key used to encrypt the data being passed between a Web browser and Web server is 256 Bits in size. Because the size of the 256 Bit key is large it is computationally unfeasible to crack and hence is known as strong SSL security.

Domain Validation (DV) Certificates

DV Certificates are issued only after verifying/ confirming the registrant or person who registered the domain name originally. This is done by using currently established and accepted vetting process, such as an email based communication to confirm the information. nsProtect™ Secure Xpress Certificates are validated and issued within minutes after completion of verification process and base on system availability. See Issuance Time for more information.

Extended Validation (EV) Certificates

EV Certificates provide a higher level of validation and are available to all business and government entities, but are not available to individuals. The EV process is more rigorous and detailed than for any other Certificate and will require additional steps, which may include obtaining signatures from several people within the applying company, legal verification of the business's existence, etc. EV Certificates provide additional visual assurance by turning your browser address bar green (when using modern browsers like IE7).

Green Address Browser Bar

This is one visual sign of security that your customers look for to confirm that your website is secure. This visual sign of security only comes with Extended Validated (EV) Certificates because of the level of validation or confirmation that goes into issuing an EV Certificate. Differentiate your site from the competition and have an extra visual assurance for customers that your site is safe and credible.

Guarantees

Guarantees are included with all Network Solutions SSL Certificates. A guarantee is incorporated into each SSL Certificate to provide your website visitors a level of comfort and assurance that if your customers incur monetary losses resulting directly from an online credit card transaction they will be compensated. If the loss is a result of a miss-issued Certificate, your customer will receive reimbursement up to $1 Million.

  • nsProtect™ Secure SSL Certificates - Advanced, Wildcard and Extended Validation - aggregate guarantee amount is $1,000,000
  • nsProtect™ Secure SSL Certificates - Basic - and the nsProtect™ Assured Site Seal aggregate guarantee amount is $50,000
  • nsProtect™ Secure SSL Certificates - Xpress - aggregate guarantee amount is $10,000

https:

This is one of three visual signs of security that comes with all of Network Solutions SSL Certificates. In every Web address it starts with http://www. but with an SSL Certificate it makes the site secure so the 's' is added to the end of the https://www.

Issuance Time

Upon receipt of all validation documentation the process varies per SSL Certificate based on the level and amount of activities it takes to verify all information.

  • nsProtect™ Secure Xpress (DV) is issued within minutes* because all validation is done through electronic processes and only validates/ confirms the person or registrant of the domain who has registered the domain.
  • nsProtect™ Secure Basic (OV) is issued in 2-4 business days* after verifying/ confirming the legitimacy of the applicant's business.
  • nsProtect™ Secure Advanced (OV) is issued in 1 business day* after verifying/ confirming the legitimacy of the applicant's business. For this SSL Certificate you are paying more to get the same verification done faster.
  • nsProtect™ Secure Wildcard (OV) is issued in 1 business day* after verifying/ confirming the legitimacy of the applicant's business. For this SSL Certificate you are paying more to get the same verification done faster along with the ability to use the same SSL Certificate across multiple sub-domains.
  • nsProtect™ Secure Extended Validation (EV) is issued in 4-5 business days* after verifying/ confirming the legitimacy of the applicant's business. This process of validation is more rigorous and detailed than any other Certificate and will require additional steps, which is why it takes the longest to complete.

Organizational Validation (OV) Certificates

OV Certificates are issued only after verifying the legitimacy of the applicant's business. This is done by using currently established and accepted vetting process, like manually checking credentials such as Dunn & Bradstreet number, articles of incorporation, WHOIS, passport, driver's license, etc. nsProtect™ Secure Basic, Advanced and Wildcard Certificates are organizationally validated.

Padlock or Closed Padlock Symbol

This is one of three visual signs of security that comes with all of Network Solutions SSL Certificates. In most address bar areas you can find an emblem that looks like a padlock, which only a key can open. This symbol shows customers of your website that it is secured by an SSL Certificate.

Site Seal or SSL Certificate Seals

This is one of three visual signs of security that comes with some of Network Solutions SSL Certificates. † Four (4) options of seals that can be placed on your website to show customers that your website is secure and that Network Solutions is your SSL Certificate provider. Once a site seal is installed into your website it is clickable so that customers may view your SSL Certificate information, which verifies even more that your site is secure and can be trusted to transact personal information on.

SSL

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the transaction security protocol used by websites to protect online communications. The most common use of SSL is to provide protection for confidential data, such as personal details or credit card information, entered into a website.

Unlimited Sub-Domains

This is a feature that comes with Wildcard Certificates. This Certificate is available for situations where multiple secure sites are needed. Each website is handled as a separate site but is secured with the same SSL Certificate. These are ideal for larger companies that need to run multiple secure sites.

Validation Process

A validation process is used to establish that all SSL Certificates are sold to legally qualified entities. The validation process varies based on the SSL Certificate type:

  • Domain Validation (DV) Certificates
DV Certificates are issued only after verifying the registration of the domain. This is done by using currently established and accepted vetting process, such as an email based validation using information from the WHOIS database. nsProtect™ Secure Xpress Certificates are validated and issued within minutes*.
  • Extended Validation (EV) Certificates
EV Certificates provide a higher level of validation and are available to all business and government entities, but are not available to individuals. The EV process is more rigorous and detailed than for any other Certificate and will require additional steps, which may include obtaining signatures from several people within the applying company, legal verification of the business's existence, etc. EV Certificates provide additional visual assurance by turning your browser address bar green (when using modern browsers like IE7).
  • Organizational Validation (OV) Certificates
OV Certificates are issued only after verifying the legitimacy of the applicant's business. This is done by using currently established and accepted vetting process, like manually checking credentials such as Dunn & Bradstreet number, articles of incorporation, WHOIS, passport, driver's license, etc. nsProtect™ Secure Basic, Advanced and Wildcard Certificates are organizationally validated.

Wildcard SSL Certificate

A Wildcard SSL Certificate allows you to have SSL encryption on multiple sub-domains with the help of a single Certificate.
