Q: When do my changes take effect?
-
A: Your DNS updates will take up to 2 hours to take effect. Please note: If you have recently moved your DNS back to Network Solutions, it may initially take 24 -36 hours for your DNS to update throughout the internet.
When someone types a URL in their browser, their ISP's name servers will call out to the Authoritative Internet DNS server for that domain to determine what IP address is associated with the requested website, and route the person to the correct location. The ISP then stores this website name and corresponding IP address in its name servers for the next 2 hours in case someone else wants to visit that website. After the 2 hours has expired, if someone using the same ISP wants to visit the same website, the process is repeated, and any new IP addresses will be utilized at that time.
Updates may appear quicker at some locations because there are many name servers on the Internet, and each one will be retrieving updates at different times within the 2 hours after your changes have been made. This same process works for all DNS record types, A records, MX Records, and CNAME records.
