What is a Change of Ownership on a Domain?

Overview

Select an option below for more information:

What Does Change of Ownership Mean?

Change of Registrant (CoR), also known as Registrant Name Change Agreement (RNCA), involves transferring the rights of a domain from one Network Solutions account to another. It covers transferring domains only and does not extend to transferring other products, such as Hosting, Security, Email, etc. As written above, Change of Ownership may also be referred to as CoR, Transfer of Registrant, Account Change, or Employee to Company Transfer.

In many cases, it can be done online by initiating a domain transfer in your Account Manager or Network Solutions storefront. For more information, please see How Do I Initiate a Transfer Between Accounts?

If unable to initiate the domain transfer online, the Transfer of Registrant Form must be used to initiate the request. Below are scenarios where you must complete the form:

  • If the Current Primary Contact wants to transfer the domain to another account but cannot access their account or email address listed on file
  • If the Current Registrant is deceased
  • Transferring ccTLDs (Country Code Top-Level Domains), such as .us, .ca, .au, and more

For more information, please see What are the Requirements to Complete a Change of Ownership?

What are the Requirements to Complete a Change of Ownership?

Note: The requirements below only apply if you need to complete the Transfer of Registrant Form.

To ensure successful completion of the Change of Ownership, you must provide the following:

  • The domain you want to transfer
  • The Current Registrant's name and address
  • If the domain is being transferred to an existing account, please provide the account number. If the domain is being transferred to a new account, please fill in all the required information in the form's "New Registrant" sections.
  • If the business name has changed due to an acquisition, merger, or business name change, please provide legal documentation from the applicable Federal, State, or Local agency validating this change.
Note: We do not accept third-party purchase agreements.
  • A notarized letter stating that you are making the request. This letter must include your name and handwritten signature, which must be notarized.
  • A valid (non-expired) Government-issued Photo ID (DL/Passport/Military ID, etc.)
Important: If the Current Registrant is deceased, you and the person authorized to sign on behalf of the Current Registrant must fill out the form. The person authorized to sign on behalf of the Current Registrant must sign in all sections of the form that say, "Current Registrant." You, as the New Registrant, must sign in all areas that say "New Registrant." Legal documentation must be provided showing the person signing on behalf of the deceased can do so through the Power of Attorney, Executor of Estate, or Administrator of Will. Also, they must provide a copy of the death certificate.

Once you have completed the form, you must scan and email it to [email protected].

Please allow 2 to 3 business days for us to review your request. Once reviewed, we will contact you with further information concerning your request.

How Do I Initiate a Transfer Between Accounts?

If you want to move a domain you own to another Network Solutions account, you can do so within your Account Manager. Please see Initiating Transfers into Another Network Solutions Account within the article What Is the Process to Transfer a Domain Name?

Note: No charges will be applied for the transfer.

Once the transfer request has been initiated, Network Solutions will email the Current Registrant, asking them to authorize the transfer request.

The current and new registrants have 14 days to authorize the transfer request. Once authorized, the domain transfer will be complete, and we will notify you within 48 hours. If the current and new registrant do not authorize the request within those 14 days, the request will be denied.

Warning: Transferring a domain between two Network Solutions accounts will trigger the Change of Ownership process and put your domain(s) on a 60-day COR (Change of Registrant) lock per ICANN's Transfer Policy.
