Ecommerce Online Store - Operations - Page Redirects

nsCommerceSpace™ Page Redirects

Page Redirects allows you to set a 301 redirect from an old page to a new location. After the page redirect is set anyone that visits that old URL will now be redirected to the page of your choosing. This is very important to maintain top SEO rankings in the search engines.

How to Configure a Page Redirect

1. Navigate to the Page Redirects section of your nsCommerceSpace™ Control Panel - Home >> Operations >> Page Redirects.

2. Scroll to the bottom to see the Add a New Page Redirect section.

3. Enter your Old URL extension (the part after your domain).

For example, if you want to redirect http://www.networksolutions.com/page123.html you will enter /page123.html

4. Next enter the New URL where you want to redirect people that visited your Old URL (/page123.html).

  • The new landing page can be within your site (ex. /about-us.aspx).
  • The new landing page can also be outside your site (ex. http://www.google.com/maps).

5. Click the Create button.

Allowable Page Redirects

The following are common page redirect page types available for redirect:

1. Web Page Files Extensions - Redirecting common page extensions found on your site like .aspx, .html, .php, .txt, etc.

2. Desktop File Extensions - Redirecting traffic to files you had uploaded like .pdf, .doc, .xlsx, etc.

3. No Extensions - When a site uses implied default pages (ex. http://www.networksolutions.com/dir/) where default.aspx is implied. This can have a Page Redirect by entering "/dir/" into the Old URL field.

4. Pages in a directory - Pages found in a directory can be redirected (ex. http://www.networksolutions.com/dir/page123.html) can be redirected with a "/dir/page123.html" in the Old URL field.

Non-Redirectable Pages

The following pages are not able to be redirected due to software limitations or dependencies on the page URL:

1. Predefined Pages - Since Predefined Pages cannot be deleted, they are not eligible for redirection.

2. /index.aspx Page - A user cannot redirect the default homepage URL to a new page.

3. URLS with an anchor - URLs with an internal page anchor tag (#) in the URL string will not allow for multiple redirects (ex. one internal page anchor to redirect to one page, but another to a different page).

Common Error Messages

Below is a list of common error messages a user may receive when creating a Page Redirect:

1. The old URL exists in your store's sitemap. - This means the Old URL you entered exists on your site and therefore is still in your sitemap. Remove the page from your site before you redirect it.

2. Old URL already exists. - This means you have entered the Old URL twice. Since you cannot redirect the same page to two pages, you should edit the existing entry.
