How to Mark Emails as Spam in Cloud Mail

Tired of your email inbox overflowing with unwanted emails? Drowning in promotional offers and suspicious messages? Fear not! Here's your one-stop guide to conquering your cloud mail by effectively marking emails as spam and ensuring important messages don't get caught in the filter. We'll delve into both sides of the coin: "Mark Emails as Spam in Cloud Mail" and "Mark Not spam", empowering you to manage your inbox like a pro.

Important: This article applies to customers with Cloud Mail. To determine your email version, see How Do I Determine My Email Platform?

In this article, we will discuss:

A false positive message is a legitimate email incorrectly flagged as spam (junk) by prevention methods. In contrast, a false negative message is a spam or phishing email that is not flagged as spam (junk) by prevention methods.

Mark Not Spam in Cloud Mail

If you have accidentally clicked Mark as spam, but the email is not spam (false positive), or if you search the Spam folder and find a message that is not spam (false positive), follow these steps:

  1. Within the Mail app, locate the message in the Spam folder.
  2. Then, click the horizontal dots below the time displayed when you received the message.

The message will be moved automatically to your inbox. Information about this message is instantly sent for AI assessment. AI learning minimizes the chance for this type of message with identifying characteristics to be automatically routed to the Spam folder.

Note: Our system relies on user feedback to keep our false positive (This is Not Spam) and false negative (This is Spam) numbers low. When a customer reports a message as an incorrect verdict, the message is sent to our Global Network Intelligence servers. There, the messages are “clustered” according to an internal algorithm. Once the messages are clustered, we have several layers of analysis, from fully automatic to fully manual, to investigate and assign the correct value. Because we routinely get false negative (This Is Spam) feedback from customers that we know is not spam (for instance, one of the largest categories of TIS reports is Amazon, followed by Facebook and Twitter), we rely heavily on the automated systems first to weed out the good mail before having manual review.
This process also means we will toss requests for TINS due to user complaints. If 90% of the reports agree with a verdict and 10% do not, it is unlikely the verdict will be overturned. Because we track the volume of messages, we compare requests for heuristically similar messages and determine the end verdict. While we currently do not track user reporting patterns, we do know that there is a subset of reports that are fraudulent and are treated as such. However, there are grey areas in this, where a specific user may say a message is not spam, but either they are “outvoted” by FBL reports or ignored due to other rules. For instance, one routinely disputed category is dirty commercial email (DCE). This form of email is marketing, and in some readers’ eyes, it is clean. However, the senders generally do not respect good sending habits like double opt-in and are therefore categorized as negative.
