In 2001, Linda Greiner adopted her first Shetland Sheepdog named Sashi. Sadly, her dog had been beaten and abused by her previous owner, a situation which kept Greiner in constant contact with the organization, NJ Sheltie Rescue. Slowly, Greiner helped Sashi learn to trust people and gain self confidence. Sharing a similar passion with those who work at the rescue organization, Greiner soon became heavily involved, as a volunteer, fostering Shelties in hopes of finding each one a loving home. Dogs that need rescuing come from shelters, owner turn-ins, or strays. The reasons people have for giving up their dogs are endless, Greiner points out. Two of the most common reasons include family health issues (i.e., allergies) and family relocations.

Challenge

There are also some families which no longer want a dog. In some cases, rescue agencies are trying to find new homes for dogs whose masters have died. Greiner decided to create a website, NJSheltieFosterMoms.com, to showcase pictures of some of the foster dogs being cared for on behalf of NJ Sheltie Rescue. "I took advantage of Network Solutions®' free trial of their Website Builder Tool and was so pleased," she said.

Solution

"I love the Website Builder Tool software, it's incredibly easy to use and it's friendly for folks who don't know HTML. It's completely intuitive; I didn't need to read instructions to get started." She created a Web page for each foster dog highlighting pictures, videos, and stories. "At first the website was just for friends, but then it started generating interest from the outside public. It gives people a place to contact us and ask questions," said Greiner.

Result

Within a year of the launch of NJSheltieFosterMoms.com, new homes had been found for 28 foster dogs. Many of the adopted dogs have their own homepage which enables the adoptive parents to send updates for as long as they want. For example, Zippydo's adoptive mom sent updates for three years after her adoption. In 2007, Greiner was also able to use the site to rally support for a group of adult dogs rescued from a "puppy mill" in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. From raising funds to finding homes to public education, the site has become a powerful tool for the cause and for the work being done by NJ Sheltie Rescue. And not only is the Website helping to find homes for dogs, it also supports the fundraising done in support of NJ Sheltie Rescue. Events, such as an annual picnic which helps to generate funds to cover medical costs for the dogs, can easily be promoted on the site.
