nsProtect™ Secure Extended Validation:

EV Certificates provide a higher level of validation and are available to all business and government entities, but are not available to individuals. The EV process is more rigorous and detailed than any other SSL Certificate and will require additional steps, which may include obtaining signatures from several people within the applying company, legal verification of the business's existence, etc. You move through the various stages of validation using Network Solutions Account Manager. Email communications will also be sent to you to assist you in the process.

EV Certificates provide additional visual assurance by turning your browser address bar green (when using modern browsers like IE7).

Since the validation process is so rigorous it can take four to five business days* to complete. Upon receipt of all documentation, the process is completed. Once all validation is complete, the SSL Certificate is issued electronically and is ready for installation on the website. If the site is hosted with Network Solutions, much of this installation process is automated. Extended Validation Certificate Requirements

If you're looking for an SSL Certificate that offers the highest levels of validation along with the visual assurance of the green browser bar, then an Extended Validation SSL Certificate may be right for you - if you meet the EV requirements.

You qualify for an EV SSL Certificate if:

  • You are a government entity
  • Your business is a legal corporation
  • Your business is a general partnership
  • You are a sole proprietor
  • Your organization is an unincorporated association

The requirements for issuing an Extended Validation Certificate were developed by the Certification Authority/Browser Forum, a group of leading Web browser vendors and SSL Certification Authorities (CAs), including Network Solutions®. Please visit their website for complete details.

All CAs must adhere to these EV process guidelines when determining whether an applicant is eligible for an EV SSL Certificate or has met the necessary validation criteria.

An EV SSL Certificate can be issued to entities that meet the following requirements:

Privately-held or Publicly-held Corporations

  • The privately-held or publicly-held corporation MUST be a legally recognized entity whose existence was created by a filing with (or an act of) the Incorporating Agency in its Jurisdiction of Incorporation (e.g., by issuance of a certificate of incorporation);
  • The privately-held or publicly-held corporation MUST have designated with the Incorporating Agency a Registered Agent, Registered Office (as required under the laws of the Jurisdiction of Incorporation) or equivalent;
  • The privately-held or publicly-held corporation MUST NOT be designated on the records of the Incorporating Agency by labels such as "inactive," "invalid," "not current," or the equivalent;
  • The privately-held or publicly-held corporation's Jurisdiction of Incorporation and/or its Place of Business MUST NOT be in any country where the CA is prohibited from doing business or issuing a certificate by the laws of the CA's jurisdiction; and
  • The privately-held or publicly-held corporation MUST NOT be listed on any government denial list or prohibited list (e.g., trade embargo) under the laws of the CA's jurisdiction.

Business Entities

  • The business entity MUST be a legally recognized entity whose formation included the filing of certain forms with the Registration Agency in its Jurisdiction, the issuance or approval by such Registration Agency of a charter, certificate, or license, and whose existence can be verified with that Registration Agency;
  • The business entity MUST have a verifiable physical existence and business presence;
  • At least one Principal Individual associated with business entity MUST be identified and validated; Where the business entity represents itself under an assumed name, the CA MUST verify the business entity use of the assumed name pursuant to the requirements of Section 15 herein;
  • The identified Principal Individual MUST attest to the representations made in the Subscriber Agreement;
  • The business entity and the identified Principal Individual associated with the business entity MUST NOT be located or residing in any country where the CA is prohibited from doing business or issuing a certificate by the laws of the CA's jurisdiction; and
  • The business entity and the identified Principal Individual associated with the business entity MUST NOT be listed on any government denial list or prohibited list (e.g., trade embargo) under the laws of the CA's jurisdiction.

Government Entities

  • The legal existence of the government entity MUST be established by the law of the Jurisdiction of Incorporation;
  • The government entity MUST NOT be in any country where the CA is prohibited from doing business or issuing a certificate by the laws of the CA's jurisdiction; and
  • The government entity MUST NOT be listed on any government denial list or prohibited list (e.g., trade embargo) under the laws of the CA's jurisdiction.
  • At this time, an EV Certificate CANNOT be issued to any person or any organization or entity that does not satisfy the requirements above.

256-bit Encryption

256 Bit SSL is also referred to as strong SSL security. The 256 Bit tells users that the size of the encryption key used to encrypt the data being passed between a Web browser and Web server is 256 Bits in size. Because the size of the 256 Bit key is large it is computationally unfeasible to crack and hence is known as strong SSL security.

Upon receipt of all validation documentation the process varies per SSL Certificate based on the level and amount of activities it takes to verify all information. nsProtect™ Secure Xpress is issued within minutes because all validation is done through electronic processes and only validates/ confirms the person or registrant of the domain who has registered the domain.

Padlock or Closed Padlock Symbol

This is one of three visual signs of security that comes with all of Network Solutions SSL Certificates. In most address bar areas you can find an emblem that looks like a padlock which only a key can open. This symbol shows customers of your website that it is secured by an SSL Certificate.

Site Seal or SSL Certificate Seals

This is one of three visual signs of security that comes with all of Network Solutions SSL Certificates. Each type of SSL Certificate comes with four (4) options of seals that can be placed on your website to show customers that your website is secure and that Network Solutions is your SSL Certificate provider. Once a site seal is installed into your website it is clickable so that customers may view your SSL Certificate information which verifies even more that your site is secure and can be trusted to transact personal information on.

Why does my business need an SSL Certificate?

The encryption provided by SSL Certificates helps to prevent hackers from stealing private and confidential information sent via the Internet. A website secured with an SSL Certificate provides a safe place for customers to enter sensitive data such as credit card information, bank account numbers, etc. If your client's websites transact business or collect sensitive information, they need an SSL Certificate!

Can I upgrade my current SSL Certificate to an EV Certificate?

Yes, if your business meets eligibility guidelines. What is the Network Solutions® EV Root Updater Code?

When running on the Microsoft Windows Vista™ platform, Internet Explorer® 7 (IE 7) automatically updates its store of EV Roots. Unfortunately this is not the case when IE 7 is running on Windows® XP. To address this, Network Solutions developed its EV Root Updater Code to automatically update your visitors' Web browsers to support your EV SSL Certificate. The EV Root Updater Code is a simple script that you can embed into the secure pages of your website. The EV Root Updater Code will transparently update the EV Roots stored in your visitors' IE 7 browsers on Windows® XP so their address bars will display as green for your website address.

If the applicant's credentials can't be verified in accordance with the CA/Browser Forum guidelines, then the Certification Authority will not issue the Certificate.
